There is a 12 volt bulb installed in the switch as an indicator light. Positive or negative ground is not a concern. Here is an original, of-the-period, accessory used to add turning signals your 20's-30s era cars where hand were standard.

It can be used with individual Lamps or filaments for front signals and either filaments, which were not common back in the day, interrupting brake light power to correct rear. It works perfectly, I pulled myself, and looks great.

The unit can be used with 6 volt cars as well, just change indicator bulb. I will start this at half of that, no reserve.
